Finally dipping into J.D. Ballam’s autobiography. I’m so excited at the premise – he grew up in the Appalachian mountains and was the first male in his family to get a passport. From living a subsistence diet (including eating rats to survive) and finishing school with only an attendance certificate, to moving to the UK to study and finally ending up as a professor it’s no doubt that he’s had a pretty fascinating life. I’ve only just started it but his family have lived in this same area for generations all living a way of life that sounds like it’s dying out. I really enjoy seeing how people in other parts of the world live. Even though this is the US, it’s a way of life that many Americans wouldn’t be able to relate to. Review to follow.
